Meet Marty Duffus: Martin W. (Marty) Duffus is the Chief of Police for the City of Osceola. Marty, as he prefers to be called, is completing his thirteenth year in that position. He also serves as a deputy medical examiner for the county. Chief Duffus was appointed as VP of the IPOA following the 2019 IPOA Training Conference which was held at Camp Dodge in February. Chief Duffus was elected President of the IPOA at the February 2023 Conference.
Marty began his law enforcement career nearly 35 years ago in June of 1983 as the youngest patrolman ever hired by the City of Grinnell. While in Grinnell, Marty served as the first College Liaison Officer between the department and Grinnell College and the first Traffic Liaison Officer for the city.
In June of 1985, Marty began his 20 year career at the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. While there he served as the department’s E-911 representative and was an active participant in the launching of the first E-911 center in the county. He also served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Board of the Jasper-Poweshiek Drug Task Force. Marty finished his career with the Sheriff’s Office as the department’s investigator and served 6 years as its Chief Deputy.
Marty is a graduate of the 85th Basic in December of 1983 from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Grand View University and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
Over the years Marty has attained numerous certifications, attended many trainings and conferences and met and served with many, many people. The one take away Marty has taken from all of that is the importance of relationships: with the public and those with whom we serve.
Marty is married to Robin. They enjoy their grandchildren, motorcycle vacations and camping.
