The Sioux City Police Department has a strong community backing from the citizens it serves and its city council. Officers have numerous training and advancement opportunities.

The City of Sioux City is in the Northwest corner of Iowa along Interstate 29 and sits on the border with the states of South Dakota and Nebraska. Sioux City is the cultural, shopping and entertainment hub of a metropolitan area of approximately 169,000 residents.

The SCPD has an authorized strength of 131 sworn members. In addition to patrol work, the SCPD has numerous specialty duty assignments including: Investigations (Crimes Against Persons Unit, Crimes Against Property Unit, Special Investigations Unit, Drug Task Force, Fugitive Task Force, Juvenile Investigations, and School Resource Officers), Crime Prevention, Community Policing, Community Cultural Liaisons, SWAT, Honor Guard, Hostage/Crisis Negotiators, Peer Support Team, Accreditation, Specialized Traffic Units, K9 handlers, Drone Pilots, Traffic Investigations, Technology Unit, and Bicycle Patrol.

Starting wage for an entry level Police Officer is $62,170.37. Law enforcement officers certified in the State of Iowa or another state with equivalent training for a minimum of (2) two years or possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university will be entitled to start at $75,5568.27. Expected wage range after (3) three years of service will be $74,488.75 to $99,822, with potential for more based on future contract. Bilingual officers will receive additional compensation of 1.50% of base pay. All officers receive an additional $1,350 per year for uniform allowance, 1.50% of base pay for Taser certification, and 2.75% of base pay in deferred compensation match. After 10 years of service officers will receive longevity pay. Comprehensive retirement and benefit package included along with paid vacation, sick, and military leave.
